Why Economists Should Conduct Field Experiments and 14 Tips for Pulling One Off

چکیده

T he experimental approach has been a cornerstone of the scientifi c method for centuries. In one classic 1882 example, Louis Pasteur designated half of a group of 50 sheep as controls and vaccinated the other half. All animals then received a lethal dose of anthrax. Two days after inoculation, every one of the 25 control sheep were dead whereas the 25 vaccinated sheep were alive and well! However, many economists have long been pessimistic that an experimental approach could offer such vivid illustrations of cause and effect in their fi eld. For example, Samuelson and Nordhaus (1985) wrote in their introductory economics textbook a quarter-century ago:

Lab Labor: What Can Labor Economists Learn from the Lab?

This chapter surveys the contributions of laboratory experiments to labor economics. We begin with a discussion of methodological issues: why (and when) is a lab experiment the best approach; how do laboratory experiments compare to field experiments; and what are the main design issues? We then summarize the substantive contributions of laboratory experiments to our understanding of principala...

Positioning of microtubule organizing centers by cortical pushing and pulling forces

Positioning of microtubule (MT) organizing centers with respect to the confining geometry of cells depends on pushing and/or pulling forces generated by MTs that interact with the cell cortex (Dogterom et al 2005 Curr. Opin. Cell Biol. 17 67–74). How, in living cells, these forces lead to proper positioning is still largely an open question. Recently, it was shown by in vitro experiments using ...

A Critical Analysis of the Origin and Nature of Classical Mathematical Economics: Why Classical Economists Did Not Use Mathematics?

The role of mathematics in economic analysis is not yet a settled question. Smith, Ricardo, Mill and other eminent classical economists did not use mathematics in their economic theorizations. We have defined classical mathematical economics as the whole body of literature in mathematical treatment of economics originating mainly from the contributions of Cournot,  Jevons and Walras. There are ...

Multilayered nano-prism vertex tips for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy and imaging.

We presented a scalable fabrication method for the preparation of multilayered nano-prism vertex (NV)-tips whose dimensions can be controlled for tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). The NV-tip had sharp vertices (diameter ~20 nm) originated from the chemical lift-off process after the angle-grinding process, enabling high resolution imaging. TERS measurements were performed on brilliant cre...
